In her Budget 2024 speech, Sitharaman sketched out plans to boost infrastructure investing by 11% within the upcoming financial year while keeping the financial shortage in check. The government aims to oversee spending decreasing the budget deficit to 5.1% within the following financial year.

Key Announcements in Interim Budget 2024

"Housing for Middle Class" Scheme:

The government will launch a scheme to encourage middle-class individuals to purchase or construct their own homes.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Grameen):
Almost to its target of 3 crore houses, with an additional goal of 2 crore houses to be set for the next five years.

Health Initiatives:
  • Acceleration of Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 programs for enhanced nutrition delivery and early childhood care.
  • Promotion of cervical cancer vaccination for girls aged 9-14.
  • Extension of health coverage under the Ayushman Bharat scheme to include all ASHA, Anganwadi workers, and helpers.
Tax Relief:
Withdrawal from outstanding direct tax demand, benefit to around 1 crore taxpayers, and limits set at up to Rs 25,000 for issues up to FY10 and up to ₹10,000 for FY11-FY15.

Renewable Energy:
Enabling 1 crore households for rooftop solarization, providing up to 300 units of free electricity per month.

Infrastructure Development:
  • Fast-tracking Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 for improved nutrition delivery and early childhood care.
  • Expanding existing airports and comprehensive development of new airports under the UDAN scheme.
  • Three major railway corridor programs are to be initiated under PM Gati Shakti to enhance logistics efficiency and reduce costs.
While the specifics of tax relief for the middle class may not be as pronounced as some hoped, the budget for 2024 was a mix of measures aimed at inclusive growth, infrastructure development, and key welfare initiatives, showcasing the government's commitment to addressing diverse needs across the nation.
