Is this the new credit card scam?

I am using an Amazon pay icici credit card, and I paid my education fees of 100k on 18th November, thinking of getting 1% cashback but the amount deducted is 101200 by the merchant ccavaneu by hdfc bank payment gateway on the university portal, although I got 1% cashback that will be 1012 but still I ended up paying more fees, and I am shocked that the in payment gateway it was clearly mentioned no extra charges for credit card and at the time of transaction also I got a request for 100k only, if anyone help solving this query it would be really helpful.

Have you checked the credit card statement? The amount deducted was total in one go like there was only Rs 101200 entry in it. Or the amount was deducted like Rs 100000 and Rs 1200 separately. It will tell you that if the amount was deducted by credit card company or the payment gateway.

Probably it is being considered as 3rd party website payment and charged, which has 1% charges and 18% GST.

Is it one single entry of 101200 and it is showing against University name in the bill? Also you would have got OTP and credit card usage SMS. Please check what was the amount.Most probably mail as well. If all show 1lakh then dispute the amount and claim that only 1lakh is payable.

Sometimes on HDFC payment gateway, their's payment gateway charges for other bank's credit card just like Amazon charges convenience fee for utility bills payment using any Credit card except Amazon Pay ICICI CC.

My suggestion would be to reverify it before raising any complaint. If this isn’t the case, then you know the drill: first, raise the issue with ICICI Bank and the college payment website. If the issue still isn’t resolved, then file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman.

I faced the same issue. While paying college/school fees, multiple payment options are provided. The first one is most likely the college's own portal, while the others are third-party payment portals that incur extra charges, even though they display the same fee as the college.

(HDFC might have showed *no extra charges with HDFC CC and DC)

Most of the banks whoever not taking charges ...it will take charges from 1 january 2025 of 1 % +gst after a certain amount
