Hi everyone,
I’m 18 years old and just starting to explore the world of credit and debit cards. Over the next four years, I’ll be traveling to nearly 10 countries for academic projects and international programs. Since I’ll be spending a lot of time abroad, I want to set up a smart financial system now, something that helps me earn rewards, avoid unnecessary fees, and build long-term credit.
Right now, I’m using Scapia and Niyo Global for international transactions. I’m fairly happy with them, but I’m open to better options if there’s a more efficient setup, especially something that can scale well as my income and credit profile grow.
I’m looking for
I’d really appreciate advice from those with experience, whether you’ve gone through a similar journey or just know what works. Specific card suggestions, bank comparisons, or tips would be extremely helpful.
Thanks in advance for your time and insights.

Credit Card Preferences
- I plan to use credit cards like a debit card (paying off the full balance monthly) except during emergencies.
- I’m especially interested in cashback, travel points, or miles that can be redeemed for flights, hotels, or other travel expenses.
- I’m keeping an eye on cards like the Amex Platinum Travel Credit Card for the long term, once they reopen their applications and I am eligible.
- Low or zero forex markup is a priority, as is wide international acceptance.
Bank + Account Needs (India and Possibly International)
I’m open to opening new bank accounts—either in India or globally—if they help with the following:- International branch or ATM access
- Low or zero minimum balance requirements
- Good interest rates on savings or FDs
- Fee waivers for salary or student accounts
- Future access to credit/overdraft facilities
- Strong digital experience (mobile apps, card management, customer support)
What I’d Like Help With
- What’s the best combination of bank account + debit card + credit card for someone in my position (student, Indian citizen, frequent traveler)?
- Any Indian banks with excellent international tie-ups or services?
- What’s the best way for someone just starting out to build credit in India (and potentially abroad)?
- Any international banks or fintechs worth considering that work well alongside Indian banks?
- Are there any salary or student accounts with benefits like free forex, airport lounge access, or faster card upgrades?
