PAN and Aadhar cards have become vital documents for all financial transactions. These documents are vital for identification for being an Indian citizen. PAN is a 10-digit unique identification number issued to individuals and business houses for tax purposes. However, Aadhar is a 12-digit identification number issued for every citizen. The income Tax department has asked citizens to link their PAN with their Aadhar card.

The IT department has issued several reminders to taxpayers to link their PAN with Aadhar by 30th June 2023. However, a PAN card link with Aadhar can be done after 30th June 2023 but it must be accompanied by a penalty of Rs.1000. However, the taxpayers who have not linked their PAN with Aadhar will become inoperative after the declared date, but on payment of such penalty, it will become operative and active after 30 days. Checking Process of PAN Aadhar Link Status via SMS

Check the linking of PAN Aadhar status through SMS can be done by using the following steps
  1. The card holder has to write SMS – UIDPAN <12 digit Aadhar number> <10 digit PAN number>
  2. The user needs to send this SMS to ‘ 567678’ or ‘56161’
When the linking process of PAN with Aadhar is over, the message will appear over the phone stating that 'Aadhar is already associated with PAN (number) in the ITD database. Thank you for using our services.' If Aadhar is not linked with PAN, it will display the message that ‘Aadhar is not associated with PAN (number) in ITD database.

If the PAN Aadhar linking is not completed by 30th June 2023, then PAN will become inactive from 01st July 2023. However, this limit has been extended till 31st May 2024 with a penalty. If PAN is not linked with Aadhar, PAN will become inoperative and lead to a higher rate of tax deduction as per sections 206AA and 206CC of the Income Tax Act.

Fees for Linking

This Linking of PAN with Aadhar card was free till 31st March 2022. If the linking was made after 31st March 2022 but before 30th June 2022, a penalty of Rs.500 was imposed. However, this penalty was increased to Rs. 1000 for linking done after 30th June 2022.

Mandatory for Persons

As per section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, all PAN cardholders are required to link their PAN with Adahar for any kind of transaction. However, the government has extended exemptions to certain taxpayers from linking PAN with Aadhar. The following persons are exempted from the Linking of PAN with Aadhar card.
  • Non-Resident Indians
  • The Super senior Citizens more than 80 years of age.
  • The linking of PAN with Aadhar is exempted to citizens of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and Meghalaya

The Process of Linking of PAN with an Aadhar card online can be done without logging into the Income Tax e-filing process. The individual can check their PAN-Aadhar link status in the following steps:
  1. The user must visit the Income Tax e-filing website.
  2. The user must look out for the 'Quick Links' section on the homepage and click on the 'Link Aadhar Status' button.
  3. The user needs to enter PAN and Aadhar number in the fields provided and click on 'View Link Aadhar Status.

If the PAN is linked with Aadhar, then it will show the message 'Your PAN is already linked to Aadhar' otherwise it will show it is under validation. If the PAN is not linked then it will show check the status later or PAN is not linked to Aadhar.

Consequences of non-linking of PAN with Aadhar

If PAN Aadhar is not linked within the due date, it becomes inoperative due to which the following consequences may be followed:
  • The taxpayers cannot claim refunds for inoperative PAN cards.
  • The returns of taxpayers will not be processed.
  • The TDS/TCS will be deducted at a higher rate from the taxpayer's amount.
  • The taxpayers will not be able to submit Form 15G/H for nil TDS.
The following financial transactions cannot be done if the PAN card becomes inoperative
  • The taxpayer cannot open a new Bank Account
  • The taxpayer will not be issued debit/credit cards.
  • The taxpayer cannot deposit cash of more than Rs. 50000 during a day.
  • The individual cannot purchase bank drafts or pay orders in cash of more than Rs. 50000 in a day.
  • The individual cannot make any banking transactions exceeding Rs.10000.
