I have Kotak Zen signature credit card that offers
  • Earn 10 Zen Points for every Rs. 150 spent on Shopping (Apparels, Lifestyle goods, Departmental Stores & Jewellery), So that's around 1.67% return rate. So what is the exact defination of Departmental Stores ? And what are some examples ?

A departmental store is a place where you get anything from clothes, shoes, electronics etc under one roof. So basically Big Bazaar, D Mart, Star bazaar, Reliance mart etc are departmental stores.

So does Reliance Fresh come under departmental store or Grocery store ? Or all Grocery stores come under departmental stores ?

Reliance fresh will definitely come under groceries. They will have their own merchant code category MCC.
You will get to know once you transact on all these different stores and check in the statement how many points you got from that.

I think it depends on the MCC (merchant category code) classification. Check the MITC of your card, it might have a list of MCC’s which qualify in “department stores”. It just depends on what the Visa / Master network classified the vendor into when they took the POS machine or registration

So does Medicine stores like, TATA 1mg, True Meds, Med Plus do they come under departmental stores ?
Should not ideally be. These should ideally come under Pharmacy with MCC code 5912. Department store should have MCC of 5311. Grocery/ Supermarket should have 5411. While bigger branded stores should have their MCC correctly given but smaller ones may not have them exactly correct
