Sorry for your loss. In case of death of the borrower, the loan does not automatically transfer to family members unless there is a co-applicant or guarantor.

First thing to check is whether your father had credit card insurance / loan protection cover. Many HDFC credit cards have this. If insurance exists, the outstanding amount can be settled through the insurer after submitting the death certificate.

If there is no insurance:
  • The bank can recover the amount only from the estate of the deceased (bank balance, assets in his name).
  • They cannot force family members to pay from their own income if they are not co-borrowers.
Do not continue paying EMIs from your own account until clarity. Visit the bank, submit the death certificate, and ask them to formally mark the account as “deceased borrower”.

Regarding CIBIL: Your credit score will not be impacted if the loan was solely in your father’s name. Settlement or non-payment will reflect only on his credit report, not yours.

Avoid app-based settlement for now. Handle this through the branch in writing and keep copies of all communication.
