Mutual funds current return query

I got some lump sum money to put in mutual funds, I explored some mutual funds and found that they’re making good returns in last 6 months, does it indicate there will be loss in the next quarter? How to analyse mutual funds? Although I have plans for long term, I should be able to redeem the fund anytime, say next year in case of emergency, without loss on principal.
