If I switch my card variant from Visa to Rupay, will the existing account be closed and a new account be reflected in my CIBIL report?

Actually it depends on the bank.
The higher probability is that the same card account will be there and no new entry.
Or else the issuing date will remain the same for your new network type as well.
And the previous Card will be shown closed.

take this into consideration that either conditions doesn't make any difference to your CIBIL.

I want to switch my axis airtel credit card from mastercard to rupay

How did you change the variant. The customer care told me to close the current card and apply again for rupay variant.
I asked for network change, they sent me new card and informed old card will be active for 45 days then it will be closed, all the transactions and pending emi will be transferred.

This is a great question, especially with the recent RBI guidelines on Card Network Portability that allow users to switch between networks like Visa, Mastercard, and RuPay.

Whether it appears as a "New Account" or the "Same Account" on your CIBIL report depends entirely on how your bank processes the switch. Here is the breakdown:

1. The "Product Upgrade/Change" Scenario (Most Common)

If your bank treats this as a Product Change (keeping the same underlying credit line), your CIBIL report will usually remain unaffected.

  • Account Status: The account remains "Active" with its original "Date Opened."
  • CIBIL Impact: Your credit age (how long you've had the card) is preserved. This is the ideal scenario because a longer credit history helps your score.
  • Credit Limit: Your total limit usually stays the same.

2. The "Close and Re-issue" Scenario

Some banks do not have the technical setup to simply "swap" the network. In this case, they may close the Visa card account and open a new RuPay card account.

  • Account Status: The Visa account will show as "Closed" or "Settled," and a brand new account will appear for the RuPay card.
  • CIBIL Impact: * Credit Age:If this was your oldest card, closing it could decrease your average credit age, potentially causing a small, temporary dip in your score.
    • Hard Inquiry: The bank might run a new credit check (Hard Inquiry) for the new card, which can also cause a minor dip of a few points.
